Tidal Pool, felt and drift wood, 16 x 21, Trading House, Haida Gwaii Museum.

This work is an early example of a series of images I am creating using felting as an alternative to painting. These designs will play with the idea of a western artist’s use of polymer emulsion paint (acrylic) to depict beautifully idealized nature scenes and cautionary but aesthetic images of climate destruction. What does this say about a “two-eyed” relational painting practice as both an educator and researcher? Can shifting perspectives lead to new ways of seeing and problem solving?

Artist and teacher, Sheila Karrow lives with her two children on Haida Gwaii in British Columbia. After completing her degrees in Fine Art and Education, Sheila spent several years teaching high school Visual Art and English. After ten years of full time art making, Sheila returned to educational studies pursuing a Masters degree in Art Education and is currently teaching in the district where she continues to share her passion for imaginative learning with young children and adults.

Sheila’s paintings communicate both a literal and metaphorical understanding of the natural world. She strives for an intimate connection with the subject yet also reveals the unknowable reality of such a form. Her carefully rendered images in acrylic and watercolour reveal the intensity and interconnectedness of life. The soil is filled with details of roots and new plants; and in looking deeper, one can see an abstraction of form.

“I am interested in the invisible line between land and sea. The soil, rocks, plants and animals that genesis in forest loam, share their existence with the life below the water surface. The space between land and sea tells us about ourselves. Our oceans mirror the place of society; they tell us about changing temperatures and petroleum use. The ocean holds the secrets to the future of the planet.”
